Some students at North Gwinnett high School have found a tasty way to help out needy families! In a sense, they are truly putting their money where their mouth is.
Lunch time at the school is always a busy time, but Mondays are really hectic! That's when Waffle House comes in and sets up shop. For $1, kids can buy a waffle.
"We have some that come up and say, I' only have 95 cents' and we say come on, I'll give you a nickel. It is fun to be with the kids. These are great kids," said Carol Hamlin of Waffle House.
The kids will tell you the waffles are worth the dollar, but where the money goes is probably a big part of why they're willing to pay it. North Gwinnett High School takes the profit from the sales and puts it right back into the community.
Duvall Braxton leads the Care Team – a team set up to help families in need.
"It may be financial. It may be something as far as for books. It may be that a parent or the family needs help with utility bills, or with food or clothes. Anything they can call into the school, if we have the means, we'll try to help," said the Care Team's Duvall Braxton.
At Christmas, the Care Team was able to help 12 families with food and needed supplies. it's all because North Gwinnett students have decided they won't waffle when it comes to helping others.
"We have a lot kids that bring money in and they usually buy a cookie or something like that, but now they're using it for something that gives back to the school," said Braxton.
Braxton says he has a special place in his heart for the waffle fundraiser because when his home burned down, it was the north Gwinnett family who helped his family get through a difficult time.
