Deputy arrested on charge of grand theft

PORT ORANGE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A Volusia County sheriff's deputy has been suspended from his position as a result of his arrest by the Port Orange Police Department on a grand theft charge.

Lt. Brian Nardiello, 39, has been with the Sheriff's Office since February 2002. His current assignment prior to his suspension was in Court Services.  The criminal charge isn't connected to Lieutenant Nardiello's duties with the Sheriff's Office, a spokesman with the agency said.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office contacted the Port Orange Police Department in May of 2012, alerting them to an allegation that Nardiello had possibly been involved in a theft while serving as president of the Trailwood Townhomes Homeowners Association. The Trailwood Townhomes is located at 3960 Willow Trail Run in Port Orange.

A criminal investigation by Port Orange police culminated with a felony arrest warrant being issued for Nardiello.  Nardiello was taken into custody at his home, without incident, and transported to the Volusia county Branch Jail.

The Sheriff's Office is conducting an internal investigation into the allegations against Nardiello.
