Wedding ring lost during Polar Plunge found on Valentine's Day

Posted: Updated:

When a St. Francis man lost his wedding ring during this past weekend's Polar Plunge on Crooked Lake, he refused to give up the search -- and his persistence paid off on Valentine's Day.

On their very first Valentine's Day 12 years ago, Bob Neumann's then-girlfriend recorded a message to her future husband.

"I love you all the day every day," it read -- and he had it engraved on his wedding ring. When he lost it, he knew he would search for the ring all day every day until he found it.

"It is a ring in a hay stack, a ring on a lake," he said.

Neumann was watching a friend make the leap into the lake for the Special Olympics. Since he has a daughter with Down syndrome, the event is dear to him.

"It's just a tremendous event that people involved with it are doing because they want to help people," he said.

He was trying to help Kiaya stay warm that day, and he believes he lost his wedding ring when he picked her up.

"It felt like a piece of me was missing," Neumann said.

So for six days, Neumann spent hours on the snow-covered lake looking for it -- even though it had snowed twice since it had gone missing. He used a shovel, a rake and a metal detector before he decided to just start scraping. To his relief, the ring appeared -- on Valentine's Day morning.

"All of a sudden, there it was," Neumann said. "I got down on my knees and was so thankful."

The find is certainly one the couple will celebrate for years to come.
