Couples Argument In Motel Ends In Deputy Involved Shooting

Posted: Updated:
Monterey Park, CA -

Police shot and killed a gunman this morning after responding to a call of a disturbance between a boyfriend and girlfriend at a Monterey Park motel, a sheriff's deputy said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which happened just after midnight in the 400 block of Atlantic Boulevard, said Deputy Don Walker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, whose homicide detectives are assisting Monterey Park police in the shooting investigation.

Arriving officers were directed to a vehicle leaving the scene and two police units made a traffic stop at the corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Harding Avenue, Walker said.

"The suspect vehicle stopped and a male passenger exited the vehicle, '' he said. "After the suspect brandished a handgun, an officer involved shooting occurred.''

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a handgun was recovered, Walker said.

In addition to the sheriff's department, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and County of Los Angeles Office of Independent Review will also investigate the shooting, as is standard in such cases. The Los Angeles County coroner's office will also be a part of the investigation, Walker said.
