Driver leaves path of destruction in Sun City

SUN CITY, Ariz. -

An out-of-control driver with a medical problem knocked down signs, trees and fences Monday morning, which came as a shock to some people waking up.

About 3:30 a.m., Sun City Fire crews near Boswell Hospital observed a car speed past them at about 100 miles per hour.

The crews followed the car and witnessed it hit another vehicle and three or four stop signs near 103rd Avenue and Olive. Then it continued on, hitting the side of house -- taking a fence out and almost ramming into a bedroom.

The driver backed up the car, proceeded to run over more stop signs and hit two vehicles, a tree and two more homes.

The driver finally stopped in front of William Bischoff's house.

"Sounded like thunder more than anything else..I got up..walked through my house to see if there were any lightning bolts..started checking my backyard first, then I came out here and I said you gotta be kidding me..my van," said Bischoff.

Bischoff adds that if the driver didn't hit his van, the car would've taken out his porch.

According to the fire department, when crews approached the driver, the elderly man told them he was looking for a hospital and claimed to have a medical condition.

88-year-old Claude Elton, the driver, was not seriously injured. He lives in Sun City.

"If he had a medical condition, I'm curious why he was driving," said Bischoff.  "I was told they started following this guy by up around Boswell Hospital..if he was just coming out of the hospital, why would he have been driving?"

The good news is that while the homes and vehicles sustained serious damage, the owners were not injured. They're left picking up the pieces.
