Pendleton gun control PSA, after school programs` effect on violence: Chat Room

On Monday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and Consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss the recent PSA done for gun control and the impact of after school programs on violence.
Hadiya Pendleton's mother recently made a public service announcement for gun control urging congress to make changes "starting with background checks." The question lies in whether or not this was a good idea.
Susanna thinks it feels sort of exploitative given the fact that this teen was just buried six days ago. Rochelle disagreed, stating its a perfect time for her mom to do this PSA - while national attention is still on her tragic death. Both ladies agree that the message is not focused on the real problem: Criminals don't get guns legally so background checks aren't relevant to them.
The ladies then discussed Mayor Emanuel's recent decision to allocate $2 million to an after school program, Becoming A Man-Sports Edition, which President Obama recently touted on his visit to Chicago.
Susanna said its a no-brainer, as most after school programs definitely help troubled children. Rochelle is thrilled that 2,000 young men will get to experience this program which has been proven to help get kids to stay in school, teach them how to deal with anger and help them academically.
