DELTONA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Deputies have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run crash that injured a 4-year-old boy sitting on a bus bench.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office has charged Jeremy Vega, 19, with driving on a suspended license, violating probation, and leaving the scene of an accident. Vega is due in court this morning.
The boy was struck last Wednesday as he was sitting on a bus bench near the intersection of Hancock Drive and Normandy Boulevard.
Witnesses reported that two vehicles, a gold car and a green pickup truck, were engaged in a road-rage confrontation on Normandy Boulevard when the driver of the gold car lost control and slammed into the bench.
After hitting the boy, the driver turned into the parking lot of Deltona Christian Church and left the scene.
The injured boy was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach by a Sheriff's Office helicopter, treated for a broken leg and several abrasions. He was released from the hospital Monday. No one else was injured.
