Report: Newtown killer wanted to out kill Norway gunman

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Adam Lanza, the man police say shot and killed 26 people, mostly children, in Newtown, Conn. was trying to out kill another mass murderer.

Anders Breivik killed 77 people in two locations in Oslo, Norway in July 2011.

Law enforcement sources reportedly told CBS News that Lanza believed he was in a competition with Breivik.

Lanza, 20, wanted to exceed Breivik's death toll and chose Sandy Hook Elementary School because it was the "easiest target" with the "largest cluster of people."

The gunman reportedly saw his victims as characters in a shooting video game and the higher the death toll, the better his "score."

Breivik surrendered to police and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Lanza shot and killed himself after firing 150 rounds killing 20 children and six adults.
