WESTLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -
The federal government is accusing a Detroit-area restaurant of discrimination after the manager told a family to leave because a daughter has a skin disease.
A lawsuit filed Wednesday accuses Golden Corral in Westland of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Danielle Duford of Garden City took her four girls to the buffet restaurant in May 2011. The lawsuit says they paid but soon were asked to leave when other customers noticed the skin of Duford's 14-month-old daughter.
Three of her children have a disease that causes skin blisters from just slight friction. Duford told the manager it's not contagious, but the manager insisted they leave because customers were uncomfortable.
"The promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act is that disabled citizens should have full access to public life. We hope that this lawsuit will assist in expanding people's understanding of the range of disabilities and the obligations to treat all disabled citizens fairly under the law," said Barbara L. McQuade, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
A message seeking comment was left with the Golden Corral's owner, Kirit Patel.
