Tight-lipped outside court, Kilpatrick very social on Twitter

DETROIT (WJBK) -

Kwame Kilpatrick doesn't like answering questions on the street, and on the rare occasions when he does say something it is usually just a tad disjointed.

But when it comes to Twitter where his profile page says he is "back from Hell and loving the air-conditioning," Kilpatrick has plenty to say.

On Thanksgiving he tweeted, "Why do they make the Thanksgiving dinner plates so small?  It forces me to go back 2, 3 or even 4 times."

In January, he wished a happy one hundredth anniversary to his wife's sorority.

Last week when his attorney delivered the closing argument in Kilpatrick's federal case, he posted a picture with his family.  It was labeled "Victory Day!" and included the hash tag blessed and highly favored.

Veteran criminal defense attorney Bill Swor said he tells his clients to avoid social media.

"It distracts from the message in court, which is my client is innocent," he explained.

Keeping up with Kilpatrick on Twitter hasn't been easy.  He blocked me from following him, but I'm a seasoned investigator.  So after a trip to the Fox disguise vault I was back in the game.

It turns out I'm not the only one to draw the former mayor's ire.  He occasionally spars with some of his 10,000 followers.  In an exchange with Cynical Detroiter, he defended the nonprofit Kilpatrick Civic Fund.  The feds say Kilpatrick used it as a slush fund.  Cynical Detroiter agreed.

Other times he has lashed out at critics.  Kpengell criticized a pastor for giving Kilpatrick money without consulting with Detroiters.  Kilpatrick called her a "hateful outsider."  She fired back with "I volunteered for your campaign & booked you ask a speaker.  I felt personally betrayed by your lies."  He responded, "I truly apologize for hurting u with my lie about my affair.  I hope you can forgive me.  My wife & children have."

But Kilpatrick also gets loads of support.  All Things Federal tweeted, "Good luck Mr. Kilpatrick definitely praying for a great outcome so you can get home to your family and live your life."

Another posted, "why is it you can do all that is positive but ppl only focus on all that is negative?"

Mixed in is plenty of homespun philosophy and other deep thoughts from the former mayor.

Recent tweets include, "It's crazy as Hell.  So many ppl r full of anger, depression & hate, they will buy whatever the devil is selling," and "The thing that usually devours, now feeds u.  The thing that tried to kill u, is now your stepping stone for new life."

That's all well and good, but Swor said defendants should avoid saying something that could hurt them in the future.

"In no circumstance should a client make, write, allow or in any other way be connected with any type of extra judicial communication," he said.

Kilpatrick may have done just that.  He has insisted to parole officials that he doesn't know anything about sales of his memoir, but his tweets suggest otherwise.  On October 11, 2011, he posed for and posted a photo with the caption "Zharia Akeem!  She saved her own money to buy my book for her Dad's B'day.  Wow!  She's 9yrs old.  Thank you so much!"

Still, it can be hard to keep things positive on social media.  Kilpatrick bragged that his youngest son got all As on his report card informing him Cornell University is "back on the table".  Within minutes, someone replied "you going to beg for more $$$."
