WINTER PARK, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A student was stabbed in the neck during a statistics class at Full Sail University, and the incident is being investigated as a hate crime, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
A Full Sail University student has been charged in the stabbing. The Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Xavier Nunez attacked another student with a screwdriver Thursday morning.
Sheriff's spokesman Jeff Williamson said Nunez uttered racial slurs and stabbed a black student multiple times in the neck and shoulder area. Nunez and the victim were among about 42 students in the classroom.
The victim was treated at the scene and refused transport to a hospital, Williamson said. His name has not been released.
Nunez has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Full Sail University is a for-profit arts school located in Winter Park, about 10 miles northeast of Orlando.
