An 18-year-old girl was booked into the Orange County Jail on Thursday after spending several hours in the hospital.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said Chelsea Keith was not wearing her seatbelt when she smashed her head into the windshield of a stolen pickup truck, in which she was a passenger. The 17-year-old female driver had crashed the truck into another car, injuring the driver of that second car, 27-year-old Julien Castrillon.
Troopers said the driver of the truck had stolen the vehicle moments earlier. A trooper spotted the truck around 2:30 a.m. on Goldenrod Road and noticed the headlights were off. The trooper tried stopping the teenagers, but the female driver kept going.
"Unfortunately, this happens all the time. These people make an active decision to run," said FHP spokesperson Sgt. Kim Montes.
Troopers said the teens were heading westbound on State Road 50 when the truck passed through a red light at State Road 417. That's when the truck collided with Castrillon's car. Castrillon has been hospitalized and remains in critical condition.
Keith is charged with grand theft. The 17-year-old driver had surgery on her foot, and when she gets out of the hospital, she will be taken to juvenile detention.
Troopers said both girls had outstanding warrants for violation of probation.
