The Catholic Diocese of Orlando has confirmed that retired Bishop Norbert M. Dorsey has died at the age of 83, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born Leonard James Dorsey on December 14, 1929 in Springfield, Mass., Bishop Dorsey was installed as the third Bishop of Orlando in 1990.  During his episcopacy, the Diocese grew from 216,000 to almost 400,000 Catholics. Bishop Dorsey established the parishes of Holy Cross, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Rose of Lima, and St. John the Evangelist, and the mission of St. Leo the Great in Lake Wales.

Bishop Dorsey also oversaw numerous construction, expansion, and renovation projects, including the building of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine in 1993, and numerous schools throughout Central Florida.

In 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted Bishop Dorsey's letter of retirement.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.
