Federal Authorities discovered two bodies this week buried under three feet of dirt in a remote area near Brainerd Avenue and the Illinois-Indiana state line.
On Thursday, they were removed from the site and now federal authorities are beginning the process of trying to prove what happened and who is responsible.
The bodies were discovered deep in the woods near an abandoned chemical and fertilizer plant. The FBI developed some new information about case that a spokeswoman described as a long-term investigation. Using grave warmers provided by the Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Chicago, agents unearthed two sets of human remains buried near a pile of rubble.
A source says the two victims were men, both bodies were decomposed and may have been there for a year.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office is conducting autopsies, but the results are not complete and details are not being released due to the pending criminal investigation.
Carl Carlsson owns one of the shuttered business buildings just across the state line and says it doesn't surprise him that a few bodies were found there.
"Nope, not at all. There's probably a lot more back there," Carlsson says.
In fact, an FBI agent on the scene had the same impression. Illinois and federal records indicate this area is a superfund site, contaminated by debris dumped here in the 80's.
A report on the GAO's website indicates a wrecking company added 10 to 12 feet of debris to the existing grade, and it's not far from an area where Al Capone is rumored to have dumped bodies years ago.
The FBI would not specify what type of criminal activity the murders might be connected to, but a source did say the says the murders were not the result of an outfit hit.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is working with the FBI and charges stemming from this investigation could come soon. At this point, the agencies have not determined whether potential suspects would be charged with federal or state crimes.
