Defense cuts could hurt Macomb County

Posted: Updated:
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Michigan's road to recovery could take a big hit if congress allows $85 million in cuts to the defense department. Tens of thousands of jobs could be at risk in our state, especially in Macomb County.

"We are the defense capitol of the Midwest," says Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel. "We have 600 companies that do defense related work and  thousands of people who are hired in the defense industry."

Selfridge Air National Guard Base is a boost to Macomb County's economic base. 66-perecent of Michigan's defense related spending gets funneled into Macomb County. The possible cuts to the nation's defense budget would no doubt be felt in the region.

The clock is ticking. In just a few days $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts will go into effect including deep cuts in military spending. Republicans are blaming Democrats, Democrats are pointing the finger at Republicans. The deadline is March 1.

"I'm an optimist," said Sen. Carl Levin. "Even though we only have a week, I'm still hopeful we can avoid these across the board cuts."
