LAKELAND (FOX 13) -
The Florida Highway Patrol says two people were killed when their car collided with a CSX train just south of Lakeland.
The vehicle was traveling westbound on Ewell Road in the inside lane from State Road 37, investigators say.
Though the train crossing lights were on and the train itself blared its horn, investigators say the people still tried to cross the tracks.
The train collided with the car, propelling it off the tracks. According to investigators, the car hit a railroad control junction box and caught fire.
Both people inside the car were killed. They have not been identified. No one on the train was injured.
