NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Friends of 28-year-old Frank Svancar Jr. call him Beau. He was brutally attacked early Sunday morning leaving a bar in New Smyrna Beach. We talked to his dad Monday night before he went into the intensive care unit to visit his son.
"He has a cracked skull, he had brain bleeding, he had his right eye socket crushed and his nose broken, and his ear looked like it was ground off on the pavement on his left side," said Frank Svancar Sr.
New Smyrna Beach police say three men attacked Svancar early Sunday morning as the Flagler Tavern was letting out for the night. His father tells us, "You've got a bunch of cowards, so they won't do it on their own so they have to have a bunch of them."
Jinger Ownby was leaving the bar and saw three men take turns punching Beau in the face, one punch from each attacker. She said he was bleeding very badly as she tried to help him. She said, "My fear was, we were going to lose him, right then and there."
Ownby says Svancar never tried to fight back during the attack. She says he did nothing to deserve a brutal beating. "The gentlemen who did it, they saw the damage and they just left. So there wasn't any compassion at all."
Police spent more than an hour Monday looking at the bar's 16 surveillance cameras for images and clues. Police are not saying what leads they have, if any.
Svancar's fathers says his son is a surfer, mountain biker, and snow boarder, and he will probably need therapy. Doctors say his balance will likely to be thrown off due to his serious head injuries.
