Clermont Police are looking for a thief that robbed a local Girl Scout troop on Saturday night. Troop leader Lynette Baker says her girls are still shaken up after the crook snatched their cookie cash then took off running.
"I don't understand a coward who would steal from little girls," said Baker. "He came around the corner, darted in behind the table, grabbed the cash box from behind the two girls and ran, and they were standing right next to each other, it was very scary."
Baker said she was with another adult and two scouts, both middle school age, selling their cookies in front of the Blockbuster on Citrus Tower Boulevard in Clermont.
Police say as they were packing up around 9:00 p.m., police say a man who they thought was a late customer turned out to be a thief, snatching the cash box from right off the table, Baker called 911.
In a 911 recording you hear Baker tell the operator, "I'm at a girl scout booth, at Citrus Tower Blockbuster! We were just robbed!"
Baker said she's just glad no one was hurt, still she says the thief made off with close to $300 -- money that goes towards trips and other activities for the troop.
"It'll cut into the profits that they make and it'll mean that they won't be able to do something that they wanted to do," Baker said.
But with more sales planned for this weekend, Baker said her girl scouts are tough cookies, and they're not letting one incident steal their drive to keep going.
"Are we stopping? No, we're tough, and my girls are tough! We'll just keep going," Baker said.
Clermont police tell us they're in the process of organizing a car wash to help replace the stolen money, the scouts will also be out this weekend at the Publix on Citrus Tower Blvd. in Clermont.
