A robber has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say he followed a handicapped man from a Kissimmee ATM and pushed him out of his wheelchair into oncoming traffic.
Jose Mojica, 31, told authorities a man was watching him as he withdrew money from a cash machine at a Shell gas station in Kissimmee on Saturday evening. As he tried to get home, the suspect caught up with him and tipped him out of his wheelchair into oncoming traffic on west U.S. Highway 192. The suspect got away with an undisclosed amount of the victim's money.
A small dog that was with the victim was injured when the wheelchair fell on it, deputies said.
The victim struggled to get up and said several cars drove by until motorists stopped to help.
Deputies used surveillance video from the gas station to track Sonny Leon Abreu, 24, who was charged Wednesday with attempted murder, robbery, abuse of a disabled adult and animal cruelty.
Mojica says Abreu stole $240, which was money he was withdrawing for his rent. Mojica has muscular dystrophy and says he has been in a wheelchair for 10 years. Now, not only does he have to find a way to get rent money, but he also has to pay bills for his Chihuahua, Lola.
"I think the man that attacks another man like me, I have no place for him," said Mojica.
Abreu will have a first appearance before an Osceola County judge on Thursday.
Several FOX 35 viewers have inquired about how they can help Mojica with his expenses.
