Suspect charged with attempted murder in baseball-bat attack on women

Posted: Updated:

Orlando Police have arrested a man in connection with the baseball-bat beating of two women returning home from the Downtown Food and Wine Fest early Sunday.

Juan Carrillo, 48, has been charged with attempted felony murder with a weapon in connection with the attack.

Investigators say Carrillo is the well-dressed man who attacked the women, hitting them over the head with a baseball bat, right outside the gate of The Grande condominiums on South Street and Liberty Avenue, where one of the women lives.

Carrillo, dressed in a shirt and tie, then grabbed a purse from one of the women before fleeing in a sedan, police say.

Police do not think Carrillo knew the victims.

"He was a complete stranger to these women," Orlando Police Sgt. Jim Young said. "This appears to be an absolute random attack if these women. He wanted to commit this robbery, and he committed a violent attack to do it."

Police credit a "key tip" for helping them identify a suspect.
