Conn. man arrested in anti-gay shirt dispute

Posted: Updated:

WOLCOTT, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut man was arrested after police say he confronted school officials in two towns about a decision allowing a high school student to wear a T-shirt bearing an anti-gay message.

Police say 69-year-old Derrell Rice of Torrington caused disturbances at a school in Plymouth and the Board of Education offices in Wolcott Wednesday morning. He was charged with breach of peace and trespassing by Wolcott police and with breach of peace by Plymouth police.

Authorities say Rice first went to Plymouth Center School, but was told the T-shirt dispute was in Wolcott.

Police say Rice was protesting a decision by Wolcott officials to allow a high school student to wear a T-shirt displaying a slash mark through a rainbow on the front.

Rice declined to comment Thursday morning.
