A handicapped Kissimmee man, whom police say was pushed into oncoming traffic after being robbed, is recovering from his injuries. His Chihuahua, Lola, was also injured during the incident and now wears a cast on one its hind legs.
Jose Mojica, 31, told authorities a man was watching him as he withdrew money from a cash from an ATM machine at a Shell gas station in Kissimmee on Saturday evening. As he tried to get home, the suspect caught up with him and tipped him out of his wheelchair into oncoming traffic on west U.S. Highway 192.
Mojica tells us his three pound Chihuahua was trying to defend him from the attacker, and his attacker kicked the dog, breaking her leg. Mojica struggled to get up and said several cars drove by until motorists stopped to help.
Deputies used surveillance video from the gas station to track Sonny Leon Abreu, 24, who was charged Wednesday with attempted murder, robbery, abuse of a disabled adult and animal cruelty.
Abreu made a first appearance before an Osceola County judge on Thursday.
Mojica says Abreu stole $240, which was money he was withdrawing for his rent. Mojica has muscular dystrophy and says he has been in a wheelchair for 10 years. Now, not only does he have to find a way to get rent money, but he also has to pay bills for his Chihuahua.
Several FOX 35 viewers have inquired about how they can help Mojica with his expenses.
