New details released in New Smyrna Beach bar beating

Posted: Updated:
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

New Smyrna Beach police investigators say that, through the gathering of additional witness statements, they have determined that a man severely beaten outside a bar may have initiated the confrontation.

The initial police investigation had led detectives to believe that Frank Svancar, 28, was the victim of a brutal attack early Sunday, February 24th.  It was believed he was beaten by assailants described as "several unknown black males."

But after talking with witnesses, investigators now believe it was Svancar who started a fight with a white, male patron at the Flagler Tavern, located at 414 Flagler Avenue New Smyrna Beach.  The investigation has determined that only Svancar and that man were involved in the fight.  Police are not identifying that bar patron at this time.

At this point in the investigation, investigators say charges will not be filed.  Svancar was put into a medically induced coma following the fight and still has not been able to provide police with a statement.

The investigation is still ongoing.
