Trike driver killed when sign flies on to windshield, FHP says

EUSTIS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A 67-year-old man died Saturday when a sign blew on to his trike's windshield, causing him lose control and crash into a wall, troopers say.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. on State Road 44 near Jay Street in Eustis.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Richard Heckler of Spring Hill was traveling west on his 2008 Honda trike motorcycle when witnesses say an advertising sign flew into his windshield.

Heckler lost control of his bike, traveled into the eastbound lanes of S.R. 44 before veering onto the southern shoulder of the roadway and into a wall.

Heckler was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand, where he died.

The official cause of the crash is still under investigation.
