Beulah Boys dance to inspire others

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The Beulah Boys know how to shake their groove thing, and the ladies love them! They are a group of retired seniors who now spend their days and nights line dancing.

In their former lives they were known as firefighters and coaches, now they're known by names like "Charmin' Chico" and "Smooth Lu." Though their roles have changed, their mission to inspire others remains the same.

"We're young, senior gentlemen. The ladies say we're kind of good looking. I don't know, now," said Luther Walker of the Beulah Boys. "Anything that has a good beat, we'll dance to it."

They range in age from 57 to 73 years old. None of them have had any formal dance training. They simply are a group of friends who wanted to stay active, so they started dancing for fun. They then took it to another level.

"I said hey, let's look good. If we can't dance, at least let's look good," Walker said.

The Beulah Boys are known for their dapper style, often dancing in tuxedos or signature cowboy hats and boots. They've performed for audiences all over the area but the crowds near and dear to their hearts are residents of nursing homes.

"A lot of times, we go in there and they're set in their ways and don't smile or what have you but when we leave there, we have them dancing," said Beulah Boys member Nick Bowers.

The Cleveland Shuffle is their signature move. It's hard to believe some Beulah Boys have had knee and hip replacements. They credit line dancing with keeping them healthy, and say they want to be a testament to other seniors.

"If you move it, you won't lose it. That's our motto," said Bowers.

The Beulah Boys practice just about every day and because they've gotten so popular, they're performing four to five times a week. For more information on the Beulah Boys, click here!
