ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A Lake Eola swan had to be euthanized following an attack by a Dachshund, which witnesses say was released from its leash by its owner.
The swan, named "Joe," was just a year old. Park rangers said he was too young to know how to fight off an attacker.
The attack happened on Sunday, but police were notified on Tuesday. One witness was able to provide a photograph of the incident as it occurred.
The swan was taken to the Winter Park Veterinarian Hospital where it was examined. A veterinarian determined that the swan had nerve damage to his leg with little chance of recovery.
The owner was not given permission to release his dog to attack the swan, according to officials.
Police investigators are attempting to identify and locate the dog's owner, who may face a fine or a charge of animal cruelty.
The loss of the swan is estimated at $500.
