A man accused of gunning down his girlfriend in front of his home will be in court for a bond hearing on Thursday. Police say Carlos Simpson killed Shikhira Dunson, who was the mother of his child, last month.
Dunson was shot to death in the drive way of the Simpson family home. Police call it murder, but Simpson's family says the couple was playing with a gun when it accidentally went off.
"This night was a playful night. It was an accident, total accident. He wouldn't hurt her, he love her so much" said a member of Simpson's family.
Denise Dunson, the victim's mother, says it was no accident. She says the couple had a rocky three year long relationship, and claims that only two days before Shikhira died, her daughter told her that Simpson had threatened her.
"He said to her if she attempted to leave him he would kill her," said Denise.
Shikhira's mother is raising Rafael, the couple's son, with help from her family.
Simpson's bond hearing is set to start 9 a.m. at the DeKalb County Courthouse.
