It's Raining, It's Pouring...It's SNOWING

Los Angeles, CA -

(AP) A later winter storm has brought showers to Central and Southern California and snow in the mountains, with heavier rain on the way.

The National Weather Service says Central and Southern California received periods of rain overnight. There are scattered reports of traffic accidents with injuries.

Highs will be in the 50s and 60s.

Scattered showers will spread as a colder, stronger low-pressure area sweeps through the area Friday, bringing a chance of thunderstorms, heavy downpours and even hail.

That storm could bring a quarter to a half-inch of rain Friday, with up to an inch in the mountains. Several more inches of snow could affect mountain passes, including the Grapevine area of Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles.

The California Highway Patrol says Interstate 5 through the Grapevine is closed because of ice and snow. To the east, Interstate 15 through Cajon Pass is open but the cold storm that blew through Ventura and Los Angeles counties early Friday is headed that way.

The National Weather Service says a winter storm warning will last until at least 10 p.m.

CHP officers and police throughout Southern California say the rain, hail, lightning and snow caused traffic crashes, spinouts and stalls.

In Santa Ana, police say a man was killed when his car slammed into a tree on a wet West MacArthur Boulevard around 2 a.m. The cause is under investigation to see how much the rain was to blame.
