AURORA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Authorities in Aurora are looking for a missing 12-year-old girl who left her grandmother's house on Thursday but never showed up at school.

Hazel Maria Gonzales, who goes by the nickname "Nini," was last seen by her family at 7 a.m. Thursday, the Aurora police department said in a missing person alert issued Friday morning.

At 11 a.m. the morning administrators at Jefferson Middle School called Hazel's parents to inform them that the girl had not shown up at school that day, the alert states.

Family members contacted several of the girl's friends but were still not able to locate her and calls placed to the girl's cell phone are routed straight to voicemail, the alert states.

Hazel is 4-foot-10, weighs about 80 pounds and has long, straight black hair and has brow eyes, according to the missing person alert.

Authorities believe she may be staying with an unknown group of high-school aged children somewhere near the 300 block of Cedar Street in Aurora.

Anyone with information should call the Aurora police investigations division at (630) 256-5500.
