NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police shot and critically injured a man during a traffic stop in Staten Island Saturday afternoon.

According to the New York Post, an officer and two detectives approached a vehicle during the stop in Castleton Corners around 2:15 p.m. The officers noticed the driver was a gang member and told him to put his hands on the wheel -- but instead he reached for something, according to the Post.

The officer then fired three shots, hitting the driver twice sources told the Post. The injured driver fled the scene and drove five blocks before crashing into a pole.

The man attempted to flee on foot, but police were able to catch him.

He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was not expected to survive from his injuries.

The Post says this is the eighth police-involved shooting this year.
