A 43-year-old St. Petersburg man was shot by police Sunday night after he allegedly charged them while armed with a pair of scissors.
Arthur Alan Dixon Jr. suffered at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 10 p.m.
According to a St. Petersburg Police Department report, officers were dispatched to 5411 4th Ave. N just after 6 p.m. in response to a suicidal subject call. Dixon Jr.'s mother told dispatchers that her son was threatening to harm himself.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with Dixon Jr., who was inside the residence. He allegedly doused himself with gasoline and would not let the officers come in.
He was holding a lighter and threatening to ignite it.
A perimeter was established around the exterior of the home as officers negotiated with Dixon Jr. through a window. As he spoke with law enforcement, he made threats and was belligerent.
At approximately 7:30 p.m., Dixon ran out a back door into the yard where two SPPD officers were stationed.
He had a pair of scissors in his hand and raised them in a threatening manner as he continued to approach the officers who continued to demand he drop the scissors.
The two officers drew their firearms and gave Dixon Jr. several warnings to halt but he refused. The subject continued towards the officers in a threatening manner and he was fired upon.
After being struck he immediately fell to the ground. Dixon Jr. was stabilized by paramedics before being transported to BMC.
The deceased had an extensive criminal history in Pinellas County and had just been released from state prison on February 17th.
The two officers involved in the shooting – Devin Jones and Curtis Wright – have been placed on paid administrative leaving pending an investigation.
Jones, 27, joined SPPD in March 2009; Wright, 30, has been with the department since April 2010.
The investigation continues.
