Awrey Bakeries reopens its door after sale

Posted: Updated:
LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

An iconic Detroit-area bakery is back in business, just over a month after a last-minute deal saved it from closing.

Awrey Bakeries' assets were set for the auction block in February, but at the 11th-hour, the owners of Minnie Marie Bakeries stepped in and bought the 103-year-old company.

"We felt so close to the company," said Minnie Marie co-owner Jim McColgan. "We didn't want to see this 103-year-old company close."

McColgan grew up near the bakery's Livonia headquarters and recalled Awrey's pastries from his childhood.

The bakery fired up the ovens at 3:30 a.m. Monday and a grand opening event was held later in the day. FOX 2's Amy Andrews was there. Click the video player for more.

Awrey's was founded in Detroit in 1910.
