ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A man has been arrested in connection with a dog attack on a Lake Eola swan, which had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

Dog owner Lawrence Labonte, 51, was arrested Saturday night in Seminole County on charges of cruelty to animals and fighting or baiting animals.

Orlando Police detectives say that on March 3 at Lake Eola Park, Labonte deliberately released his Dachshund from its leash so that it could attack the 1-year-old swan named Joe.

One witness to the attack took pictures and provided one to police.

Joe was taken to Winter Park Veterinary Hospital, where a veterinarian determined that the swan suffered irreparable nerve damage.

The swan was valued at about $500.
