LAKE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
The Lake County School Board is moving forward to allow a gay-straight alliance club at a school in Leesburg.
The school board voted Monday night 3-2 to allow the club at Carver Middle School. Dozens of supporters showed up to the meeting.
The move not only saves the gay-straight club, it protects all extracurricular clubs at county middle schools.
The proposed club sparked controversy last month, when the school proposed a ban on all extracurricular clubs not related to academic activities.
However, the decision was so controversial, the American Civil Liberties Union got involved.
The Lake School Board now has 28 days to make a final decision on the issue.
