Baby girl shot to death, a dying mother`s strength, social media saves child: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Tuesday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and lifestyle consultant Rochelle Trotter discussed the shooting death of a 6-month-old baby girl, the strength of a mother diagnosed with ALS and how social media saved a 12-year-old boy from committing suicide.

Father Michael Pfleger posted this on Facebook around 8 a.m. on Tuesday: "6 Month old Shot multiple times.....What the hell have we become? Before the Sun sets today somebody has to turn in the Shooter........SPEAK UP!"

Pfleger created that status after hearing 6-month-old Jonylah Watkins did not survive the five gunshot wounds sustained Monday afternoon, when she and her father were shot multiple times as he changed her diaper in their parked minivan.

He spoke with the Chat Room ladies about the escalating gang and gun violence in Chicago, and about how the shooters are not scared of the police. But the community's opinion of them does matter – and if residents can find the courage to speak up and turn in the guilty, maybe the violence could dissipate in our bullet-ridden city.

It's easy to take life for granted, but the video of a mother diagnosed with ALS – Lou Gehrig's disease will stop and make you think. Susan Spencer Wendel is a wife and mother of three. With possibly only months to live, she has decided to make the most out of the time she has left.

Social media has used to bully in the past, but the Chat ladies came across an example of how it has been used to help a young boy. Thousands of people sent texts and support to a young boy who had set a suicide date on his phone – for his 13th birthday – after his mother took to social media for help.
