SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -

A suspect driving a stolen vehicle was shot after being followed to the area of Gary and Combs Roads on Thursday morning.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves says their vehicle theft task force was following a suspect driving a stolen blue Ford F-150 Raptor around 7:15 a.m. They considered him armed and dangerous.

Officers say the man met up with the driver of a white Hummer in the parking lot of a park near Gary Road and Empire Boulevard.

The task force parked their vehicles in front and behind of the stolen Ford and attempted to arrest the man.

Officers say the man still tried to get away and continually rammed their cars over and over again.

At that point, officers shot at the man and hit him in the chest area.

"He wasn't concerned about all these officers with weapons pointed at him," said Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves.  "He was determined to get away and if that meant running over our officers, he would have done it."

The driver was taken to an area hospital.  He was talking to paramedics and is expected to be okay.

No word on why he would try to run from detectives.

As for the driver of the white Hummer, he stayed at the scene and is being questioned by investigators.

"You hear about it everywhere.  It's a little frightening when it's close to your neighborhood," said Kristin Fuller, who lives in the area.

No names have been released in this case.
