Chad Wolfe, a 31-year-old man from West Newton, Pennsylvania was found dead at in an elevator shaft at Tampa International Airport Friday.
It's an odd story that started on the 3rd floor of the main terminal.
That's where, just after midnight Friday, investigators say Wolfe got into the elevator.
Wolfe and his girlfriend Jessica Price had just arrived on a Delta flight out of Atlanta.
Airport police investigators say that elevator went to the 7th floor of the short-term parking lot for the airport.
Police say Wolfe's luggage was found on this floor.
That, at this point, is the only indication that he got off that elevator.
Investigators say sometime around 3 a.m., an airport maintenance worker reported a nearby elevator -- not the one Wolfe was on -- was malfunctioning.
When workers went to fix that elevator Friday morning, they discovered Wolfe's body in the elevator shaft.
At this point, it's not clear how he got there. But investigators could be seen dusting an elevator door for prints on the 7th floor.
Travelers at TIA were shocked by the news.
"I think it's pretty awful," said Eleanor Willing of British Columbia Canada.
"It's completely unexpected," said Jacqueline Mero of Ft. Lauderdale.
Police say there was no foul play involved, it just looks like he had a horrible accident that rocked the busy airport Friday.
"That's kinda scary," said Willing.
Earlier Friday, TIA officials released a statement that said in part:
"Investigators have determined that shortly after midnight on Friday, Wolfe entered an elevator on the third floor of the main terminal that stopped on the seventh floor of the Short Term Parking Garage," spokeswoman Janet Zink said in a written statement. "Around 3 a.m., airport maintenance workers reported that a nearby elevator had stopped functioning. Later that morning, when elevator technicians were working to restore the elevator to service, they discovered Wolfe's body."
Investigators turned Wolfe's body over to the medical examiner. There is no word when the autopsy will take place, or when the results will be back.
