ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
An Orlando high school teacher, arrested following accusations that he had sex with a student, was denied bond by an Orange County Judge on Wednesday.
Police said Hugh Broomes, 57, had sex with a 16-year-old female student 10 times, between November 2012 and March 2013.
Orlando County Public Schools spokesperson Kathy Marsh said Broomes was a language arts teacher at Jones High School.
Investigators said that some of the sexual encounters took place on the school campus within the 800 block of Rio Grande Avenue.
Broomes was arrested Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. and charged with 10 counts of sexual battery to a child and unlawful sexual activity with certain minors. He was transported to the jail following his arrest.
Marsh said as of Monday, March 18, Broomes has been suspended, with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation.
The judge also ordered Broomes to have "no contact" with the victim.
