OAK PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Two 17-year old Oak Park-River Forest High School students have been charged with the attempted armed robbery of several fellow students.
Michael Davis, of the 1200 block of North Austin Boulevard and Joshua Smith, of the 300 block of Chicago Avenue, were arrested following an investigation by both high school and Oak Park police.
Oak Park police Detective Commander Ladon Reynolds said both boys were charged with a single count of felony attempted armed robbery after one of the suspects was identified in a line up Thursday.
Police were alerted by a 911 call about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday after a boy displayed a handgun and demanded money from the victim at Superior Street and East Avenue in Oak Park. The student refused and the robber left.
The victim thought he recognized the boy with the gun, and a check of last year's yearbook put a name to the alleged suspect's face.
"School officials interviewed one of the offenders and obtained information implicating him in the crime," Reynolds said. "He said he obtained the weapon used from another student, and named him."
That weapon, which turned out to be a replica BB gun, was recovered from a student locker.
Police were then called and a lineup was conducted, leading to the charges.
While arrest records for minors cannot be released to the media, Reynolds said neither of the teens is known to him from previous contacts.
