Waffle House waitress helps save man in diabetic shock

Posted: Updated:

Quick action from a Waffle House server helped save a customer's life.

It all started last Sunday morning when someone noticed a 76-year-old man slumped over at the counter of a Waffle House on Barrett Highway in Cobb County.

"Someone yelled, ‘He's having a stoke -- call 911," said Renee Vance.

Renee was directly across from the customer. She says she recognized that it was not a stroke but that the man was going into diabetic shock.

"I stood behind him and pulled his head up this way and just started pouring orange juice and making him drink," Vance said.

Vance says she has experience in the area because she's diabetic herself and is studying to be a nurse.

"I knew he was going to go into diabetic shock if I didn't get some sugar in him," said Renee.

That's why she poured orange juice down his throat after checking his blood sugar with her glucose meter. Renee said the man's blood sugar was very low which can lead to organ failure. She said that by the time paramedics reached the customer she knows only as Leo, he was coming back around.

"When they took him out he was looking up at me and saying thank you," Vance said.

Dennis Vance, Renee's husband, is proud of his wife.

"As far as I'm concerned, she's a hero in my eyes any time.  She's a hero in my children's eyes," Dennis Vance said.

Dennis and Renee Vance have seven children together from previous marriages. Now that the children are grown, Renee wants to become a nurse after 27 years at Waffle House. This incident she says convinced she's headed in the right direction

"I just did what I did. I didn't think about it. It was just save him. Something's going to happen if I don't," said Renee.

Renee said that a family member of Leo came by the restaurant and said that Leo is out of the hospital and is at home.

Renee said she's shifted her hours at Waffle House to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.
