AURORA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A woman driving an SUV was killed Tuesday night when a semi crossed the median and struck her head-on along the Reagan Memorial Tollway near west suburban Aurora.

The SUV and semi collided at 7:14 p.m. on the toll road (I-88) between Butterfield Road and Route 56 in Aurora, according to Illinois State Police.

The semi was traveling east when it went through the grassy center median and into the westbound lanes of traffic, where it struck the SUV head-on, ISP Tollway District Master Sergeant Greg Minx said.

The semi stopped in a ditch on the right side of the westbound lanes and caught fire, Minx said.

The driver of the SUV, 46-year-old Amy L. Luepkas of Oregon, Ill., was killed in the crash, according to the Kane County Coroner's office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy Wednesday showed the preliminary cause of death was directly related to the crash, the coroner's office said. Toxicology samples were collected and sent to a forensics lab.

Westbound lanes were closed for more than five hours following the crash until benig reopened about 1 a.m., state police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no citations had been issued as of Wednesday afternoon.
