NJ Man Charged In Connection To Death Of Toddler; Attorney Issues Statement

BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. -

A 29-year-old Shamong, New Jersey man was charged in connection to the death of a toddler last month, investigators in Burlington County announced Wednesday.

Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi says Steven Donaldson was charged with one count of Murder. Donaldson surrendered Tuesday and was released later that day after posting bail.

Police say Donaldson was caring for 1-year-old Claudia on February 12 at his girlfriend's Cinnaminson home while she was at work. Around 8 p.m., police say Donaldson called 911 to report Claudia had stopped breathing.

The toddler was pronounced dead at Kennedy University Hospital in Cherry Hill.

According to investigators, an autopsy revealed she died from blunt force trauma to the head.

In a statement, Donaldson's attorney Craig R. Mitnick says the toddler, Claudia, "accidentally fell onto the hardwood floor of the Cinnaminson residence."

The statement continued to read: "Donaldson immediately called 911 and attempted to resuscitate the child with the assistance of 911 emergency personnel. Tragically, the child was pronounced dead shortly after the fall."

The attorney says Donaldson "in no way intentionally or purposefully hurt the 12-month-old child."
