Officer involved in shooting in Orlando's Baldwin Park neighborhood
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A police officer was the target of a shooting in Orlando's Baldwin Park neighborhood, investigators say. The incident happened around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Fox Street and Juel Ave.
Sgt. Kevin Roberson, a 19-year-old veteran of the force, did not return fire, according to Orlando Police spokesman Sgt. Jim Young.
According to a police report, the officer was working a traffic enforcement detail in full uniform in Baldwin Park. He conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle and issued a citation to 63-year-old William Jasper Cates. A short time later, investigators said Cates returned, driving a motorized scooter and wearing a mask, and intentionally ran through a stop sign directly in front of the officer.
The officer attempted to stop Cates, who then crashed his scooter. The officer approached Cates and the two became involved in a physical altercation. The officer said that, during the struggle, Cates pulled out a gun and fired. The officer was eventually able to restrain Cates as he waited for back-up support.
Neither the officer, nor Cates received gunshot wounds. Cates was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center for minor injuries. He faces several charges, including attempted murder on an officer.
