PHOENIX -

Gun control is easily one of the most talked about issues facing our nation.

Thursday has been named "The National Day to Demand Action" against gun violence.

Hundreds of events are being held across the country and one of them took place in downtown Phoenix.

It's hard to believe more people were shot and killed Arizona in the last 10 years than there were U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan.

A group of people demanded action on gun control at Cesar Chavez Plaza in downtown Phoenix, right across from City Hall.

A group called Organizing for Action stared their petition drive at the park. They want universal background checks on gun sales in Arizona, a ban on military-style assault rifles and high capacity magazines.

Maricopa County supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox was shot during a meeting at the county complex more than a decade ago.

Organizing for Action wants support from Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake and will eventually turn over the signatures to them.

"The pendulum in this country has swung too far.  We have dead people who are never coming back.  We have maimed people who will never be the same.  We have a congresswoman in Arizona who does not represent us anymore because of assault weapons and high capacity clips," said Ellen Davis.

Gerry Hills of Arizonans for Gun Safety adds, "Well I'm standing in front of you as a lifelong conservative Republican and I can tell you we all hurt, we all bleed, we all lose and it's time that our elected officials, both Democrats and Republicans represent the people that elect them and stop representing special interest lobbyists in Washington."

"Mayors Against Illegal Guns" is a nationwide event held in Tucson Thursday afternoon. The group is also asking for enforceable background checks.

Daniel Hernandez, one of congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' aides who kept her alive until the ambulance arrived, spoke at the event.

The gun control groups are doing this during Congressional spring break.  They hope to hand their petitions to lawmakers when the break is over.
