Brother: Whitey Bulger in 'tragic' situation

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - James "Whitey" Bulger's brother says the imprisoned mobster is "hopeful" but in a "tragic" situation as he awaits trial on charges he had a role in 19 killings.

Former state Senate President William Bulger spoke in an interview with the Boston Herald at a political fundraiser in Boston Thursday.

William Bulger said he's worried about the stress his 83-year-old brother may be under in solitary confinement and its effect on his health. He said Whitey passes his days reading.

Whitey Bulger was one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives until he was captured in California in 2011 after 16 years on the run.

William Bulger said he doesn't want to speculate about his brother's June trial, noting Whitey has said he's innocent. William Bulger said, "I think it's for him to make any utterances, and not me."
