Armed retired cops to patrol Lodi elementary schools

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

In direct response to the Sandy Hook school massacre in Newtown, Conn., the Lodi School District in Bergen County, N.J., will soon have armed police in the elementary schools.

The school board decided its five elementary schools will now have the added protection of armed retired police officers.

In New Jersey, the Marlboro School District was the first to put armed officers in its elementary schools following the December 2012 mass murder in Connecticut.

The Lodi police chief, who is also on the school board, said that the retired cops will carry handguns, escort visitors, and perform security checks. He told the Record newspaper that this measure is necessary because when kindergarteners and first graders get murdered, all bets are off.
