An 11-year-old boy is recovering after he stuck his hand in a dog's cage, and the dog bit his hand, severing his pinky finger.
The boy's father then shot the dog multiple times, killing it -- then he "retrieved the severed finger from the dog's stomach," according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
It happened around 6 p.m. Friday.
The boy was flown to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. There is no word whether surgeons were able to re-attach the finger.
The sheriff's office said the force of the bite may also have broken the boy's forearm.
They did not say what kind of dog it was. Animal control took possession of its remains.
