GBI report: Police, slain suspect fired 24 shots

Posted: Updated:

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says police and a man who was threating his wife with a gun in their home exchanged 24 gunshots in a standoff that ended with the suspect being killed.

The Telegraph of Macon reports the GBI's synopsis report of the March 10 shootout in Warner Robins says the suspect, corrections officer Tony Rawls, fired his gun eight times as police confronted him on his porch. The five officers fired 16 times.

The newspaper obtained the report and related 911 recordings through the Georgia Open Records Act.

The documents show Rawls became angry after reading text messages on his wife's cellphone. She later told investigators she was having an affair.

Houston County District Attorney George Hartwig concluded police were justified in using deadly force.
