AVONDALE, Ariz. -

A 59-year-old grandmother and her 3-year-old granddaughter were rushed to a hospital Saturday after nearly drowning in a man-made lake in Avondale.

It happened just before 12:30 p.m. at the Crystal Garden Lakes community in Avondale.

An officer was patrolling the area when he heard screams and saw people pulling the grandmother and granddaughter out of the lake.

"Two years we've been here, we've never seen anything like this," said Fay Sharp, who lives nearby.

Avondale Police say a grandmother and her 3-year old granddaughter were walking around the Crystal Gardens Lake community, near 107th Avenue and McDowell, when the granddaughter slipped into a man-made lake.

Sharp lives in the community which features separate lakes and almost nine miles of walking paths.

According to their website, the lakes serve as a wildlife habitat and a water purification system.

"We always think the lakes are shallow we didn't know it was as deep as it was and the officer was telling us, in fact, it has a system that pulls the water through to keep it clean, it filters it. So once the child went in, it carried it, it sucked the child," said Sharp.

Police say the grandmother, went in after the girl but could not get out herself.

"We knew it was really bad when we seen them put the tape up and they weren't letting anybody through," said Sharp.

Investigators say witnesses pulled both the grandmother and granddaughter out of the water.

The child was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital, firefighters say she was alert and is expected to make a full recovery.

Firefighters could be seen at the side of the lake, working on the grandmother before putting her in the ambulance.

At last check, she was in critical condition.

"My heart goes out to the family," said Sharp.

Police are reminding people about the dangers of getting too close to the water.

According to the Children's Safety Zone, there have been five water related deaths, including one child, so far this year in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
