Several injured in Livonia apartment fire

Posted: Updated:
LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -

A devastating Easter morning apartment fire sent a Livonia family of five to the hospital.

It happened at the Franklin Square Apartments around 5:30 a.m. That's near Five Mile and Rayburn.

Neighbors tell us the 41 year-old father who lives in the unit jumped from his balcony to escape the flames.

Most people were probably sleeping at 5:30 a.m. But Michelle Lukitich, who lives a good distance down the road, happened to be awake and heard the screams.

"I ran outside and saw a little smoke and fire," Lukitich said. "I came down and saw a lady on the ground with her little girl, then I saw a man on the ground, while another little (2 year-old) was running around."

Lukitich said the mother was screaming, "My baby, my baby is up in the apartment!"

While trying to calm the mother, Lukitich was able to wrap the 2 year-old in her coat. She noticed the little girl's legs were burned. Then she noticed the girl's father was also in bad shape.

"He was all burnt up," she said. "So I called for help."

Several members of the Livonia Police Department were the first to respond.

Without any fire gear, a police sergeant and three officers attempted to enter the building and rescue the 10 year-old still inside.

But despite their incredible bravery, the fire was too intense and they were unable to make it past the flames.

Livonia Fire arrived moments later, and were finally able to extract the 10 year-old.

The father and 10 year-old were flown to the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition. Not long after, an ambulance transported the 6 year-old, also to U-M.

The mother and 2 year-old girl were treated for minor injuries at Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire. No other injuries were reported.
